As a general practitioner, we are trusted health professionals interested in keeping your whole body healthy, and have the skills to identify and manage treatment for a range of mental health issues - anxiety, depression, general counselling.
However, mental health encompasses so much more than managing these individual conditions alone.
Rather, we aim to deliver holistic care that promotes a state of wellbeing so that an individual can realise his/her own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community (adapted from WHO definition).
Where appropriate, we can develop and review an evidence-based and needs-based GP mental health treatment plan to allow easier and more affordable access to local psychology services.
Dr Alex Ng has completed Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) with the Black Dog Institute in Australia.
Dr Alex Ng is a continuation prescriber for ADHD medications that have been previously initiated and stabilised by a specialist prescriber.
If you are enquiring about this, it is important to understand the following:
ADHD medications are regulated and restricted medicines - a face to face appointment is always required to assess eligibility for continuation prescribing.
Under NSW Health regulations, your medication therapy must be stable on your medication dosage for a set period, as confirmed by your specialist (paediatrician or psychiatrist).
Your specialist needs to formally provide a letter to me that details authority for transfer-of-care. A standard psychiatrist or specialist letter that doesn't expressly indicate this authority would not suffice; please contact your specialist to confirm this in writing if they are agreeable to this arrangement.
Prescribing of ADHD medications generally require checks including, but not limited to: blood pressure, heart rate, ECG (heart trace), blood tests and urine screening, as well as application to the Ministry of Health for a specific individualised approval which generally requires a follow up appointment for the prescription to be issued. Please allow ample time for this approval and review of results before a prescription can be completed.
If there is a need for dose adjustment, or any concerns with the parameters tested (for example, abnormal blood test results), I may need to refer you back to your specialist for advice instead of simply continuing your medication prescription.
I will generally not prescribe stimulant medications if you are also concurrently on medicinal cannabis, or other prescription drugs of addiction (S8 drugs).
